A couple weeks ago, I was given the opportunity to travel to Mexico City and explore with my Amex fam. We had the most amazing time, there’s so much to love about this vibrant city!
WHERE TO STAY
Check in at Hotel Condesa DF. The modern yet charming space, designed by architect Javier Sáchez, is home to tall ceilings, flowing curtains and custom furniture created by Parisian interior designer, India Mahdavi. A local hot spot, be sure to drop by the terrace bar for happy hour or a nightcap during your stay.
CASA LUIS BARRAGÁN
Rich in history, the nation’s capital offers a wide variety of leisurely activities that capture the essence of the city’s culture. We were in awe of all of the museums Mexico City had to offer. Casa Luis Barragán is the former residence and office of Mexican architect and engineer, Luis Ramiro Barragán Morfín. The space is incredibly photogenic with its colorful walls, untouched belongings and notable art collection with pieces from artists including Picasso, Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco and many more. If you have time to check it out, tours are available by appointment only – book in advance!
CHURROS
I’m not big on desserts but when Matt and I stumbled upon La Churrería El Moro, and we found out they’ve been serving up the best churros in town since 1935, we had to indulge. They made a churro fan out of me!
CASA AZUL
Once the home to Frida Kahlo and her family, Casa Azul is open to the public as a museum. We had the chance to check out the space and it was just as full of life and color as you can imagine. The home is scattered with a variety of mementos, photos and belongings of Frida and her husband, artist, Diego Rivera. Buy your tickets online in advance to avoid the crowds.
PUJOL
There weren’t enough meals in a day to cover all the amazing restaurants in Mexico City. On our first night, the Amex fam and I went to dinner at Pujol. The world-class restaurant has been dubbed as the best in Mexico City according to Wall Street Journal and serves up traditional Mexican cuisine with a unique twist known as “molecular gastronomy.” For the adventurous, the menu also offers escamoles (ant larvae).
WANDERING
Taking a stroll through the Condeso and Roma neighborhoods is a tourist must. Not only does this give you a great taste of the city but you might come across something amazing you could overlook if you follow a plan – let the city be your guide.
LUNCH TIME
Like I mentioned earlier, everything we ate during our trip was incredible so I have to pass along a few more restaurant recs. For brunch or dinner, head over to Lardo. The Italian restaurant is home to healthy, delicious Mediterranean inspired plates meant for sharing, making it perfect for a big group. Check out Contramar for lunch or dinner. Well known for their seafood dishes (there are some veggie), this is the perfect place to stop for a quick bite as you’re exploring the town. Another great option, Maximo Bistro, is famous for their playful plates and farm to table food. So yummy!
